Dalaman – The hot destination for 2018

Turkey is back in the holiday limelight, proving that great destinations just can’t be kept down. Bookings are up by an impressive 84%, overtaking superstars like the Costas and Canaries, with Dalaman enjoying a red-hot popularity that’s not just about the climate.

Why Dalaman?

It’s no secret why Dalaman brings holidaymakers back every year; it has something to satisfy everyone. Long, hot lazy days await the dedicated sun worshipper, who can enjoy a cool-down swim in the sparkling Med afterwards. Require a bit more stimulation? Dalaman has it covered, with incredible historical sites to explore and fun activities to keep every adrenaline fan happy.

How to get to Dalaman?

Dalaman Airport is located 6 km from central Dalaman and 88 km from Marmaris. There are lots of direct flights from Europe to Dalaman Airport. Other international flights are mostly via Izmir or Istanbul.

The airport has a regular shuttle service and transfer companies such as HolidayTaxis, DalamanTransfers and Dalaman Taxi Transfer which would take you directly to your hotel resorts.

Dalaman’s beaches

Renowned for its pristine beaches and framed by the azure Med, Dalaman is one of the jewels of the exquisite Turkish Turquoise Coast. Relaxation and everyday concerns slip away on Oludeniz beach and no wonder, with its gentle, saffron coloured sands that give onto cerulean seas. Turkey prides itself on preserving this magical location, centred upon the Blue Lagoon which is a paradise on earth – a secluded area of sparkling, crystal-clear waters framed by fine shale and sands. Rest awhile and absorb the special atmosphere of this place, or get a glimpse of loggerhead turtles and rainbow shoals of fish while you snorkel, swim or scuba.

Dalaman’s antiquities

There are plentiful historic sites to explore and wonder at, either as a break from the beach or for spending dedicated time learning about Dalaman’s superlative mythology. One of the most famous sites is atmospheric Kekova, which brings the legend of Atlantis to life – the result of a devastating earthquake, the ancient town was entirely submerged by the tsunami which followed.

Don’t miss out on the chance to get to know more about the roots of the one and only Santa Claus. That’s right, sunny Dalaman’s town of Myra is the birthplace of Bishop Nicholas, renowned for his generosity in giving gifts to the town’s children and the poor. Visit the local church erected in honour of Saint Nicholas, and learn about his importance as part of the fabric of local legends.

Take a memorable boat trip to the impressive tombs of the Dalyan Delta, carved within the rocky landscape. Enjoy optimum views from the boat deck, then disembark to further explore the delta with its clean beaches and diverse wildlife, including migratory storks and herons.

Cuisine and climate

The whitewashed, winding streets in Kalkan offer an array of traditional Turkish dishes served in charming tavernas and restaurants. The coastal locale means fresh fish served daily, with delicious, locally produced alternatives for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. During daylight, enjoy a meal on the roofs of the hotels and eateries, transformed into dining areas exposed to splendid sea views.

Dalaman boasts an enviable climate, with an annual average of 320 days filled with glorious sun. In the high summer season, there are around 13 hours of sunlit days, and the Mediterranean is perfect for a relaxing swim, wonderful for children, with crystal clear waters a draw for keen snorkellers.

Don’t forget the mud!

Koycegiz Lake’s mud baths are a must for anyone seeking the ultimate source of relaxation. Together with the Sultaniye hot springs, these sulphur abundant springs have been used since antiquity in the belief that they can make anyone who uses them 10 years younger. Whether you believe that or not, it is true that it’s a wonderfully relaxing experience and there’s no better way to pass a fun few hours.

As hot destinations go, Dalaman clearly deserves its popularity with happy holidaymakers!
