10 Travel Tips for Backpacking around India

When you have decided to take the wonderful journey of backpacking through India there are some tips that might help you along the way. Some of these tips might seem silly to say, however some of them you may have never thought about.

  1. Reservations can be complicated. Making a reservation can be the easiest idea. They can be made over the phone, or even through the internet. Some will ask for a credit card, but many will not. Be sure to ask for a pickup service from the train station, if that is how you are traveling, usually complimentary, however you might want to tip the driver.
  2. Watch your change. If you pay for something with a 500 note, be sure to get back all your change. This can sometimes be a problem, however be sure to be firm and do not back down. You will prevail in the end.  
  3. TukTuk Auto Rickshaws and buses can be helpful. With a single price no matter how far you travel, the TukTuk is a great means of transportation. They can usually carry luggage as well as several people. You can usually find one on any of the major main streets.
  4. Left luggage is convenient. You do not always have to carry it all around. For a small fee, you can usually leave you luggage on the train in a safe location while you explore the city at one of your stops.
  5. Trains are punctual. Never forget that the trains run on their schedule not yours. Always arrive ahead of schedule so you do not miss the train.
  6. Toilet paper is important.  Carry your own toilet paper and do not put it in the toilets. Throw it in the waste basket or you could mess up the plumbing.
  7. First time? This isn’t a friendly question. New people can be charged more, so avoid the question as much as possible to not be swindled out of more money than necessary.
  8. Power can have timers. Many times there are specific hours that power is shut off. Know these times because they will help you in your travels.  
  9. I.D.s are your friend. Keep your driver’s license easily available. This will make boarding trains and other situations easier.
  10. Shipping things home can be a time saver. Remember to get a receipt if you ship something home. It is helpful when making purchases at many stores.
